Accessibility

Last updated: 24 October 2026

History for Kids is designed to be enjoyable and usable by as many people as possible, including children, parents, teachers and people with disabilities.

We aim to follow recognised accessibility good practice and use the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 as our reference point.

What we are doing

We aim to:

  • use clear headings and straightforward language;

  • provide sufficient colour contrast between text and backgrounds;

  • avoid relying on colour alone to communicate meaning;

  • provide alternative text for meaningful images;

  • keep important information as real text rather than embedding it inside images;

  • make pages usable with keyboard navigation where possible;

  • use descriptive links and buttons;

  • make forms clear and easy to understand;

  • support text resizing and different screen sizes; and

  • review desktop and mobile layouts for readability and usability.

Images and historical material

History for Kids uses illustrations, photographs, maps and other historical material.

Where an image communicates important information, we aim to provide suitable alternative text or supporting text nearby.

Decorative images may use empty alternative text so they do not create unnecessary noise for screen-reader users.

Children and accessibility

The website is designed for children as well as adults, so we aim to keep navigation predictable, instructions clear and content easy to understand.

We also aim to avoid unnecessary distractions or interactions that could make the website harder to use.

Known limitations

History for Kids is still developing, and some parts of the website may not yet meet every accessibility requirement.

Generated illustrations and historical images may occasionally require further review to make sure their alternative text is sufficiently useful.

Third-party features provided by Squarespace, payment providers or other services may also have accessibility characteristics that are outside our direct control.

Feedback

If you experience difficulty using this website or need information in another format, please contact us through our Contact page.

We welcome accessibility feedback and will use it to help improve History for Kids.

Our approach

We intend to review accessibility as the website develops and as new books, activities and resources are added.

Our current accessibility target is to work towards WCAG 2.2 Level AA.
